It adapts optimally to your body shape, giving you that soft and enveloping body-hugging feeling. 🤗
The layer of memory foam in the Emma Original mattress is relatively thin.
So, you'll feel the benefits of memory foam with none of the drawbacks such as excessive heat retention or difficulty moving.
3. A supportive base layer of cold foam (19 cm / 7.4 inches)
The HRX polyfoam is a firmer cold foam base layer that offers support and stability to an otherwise soft mattress.
This base layer features contour zones.
These help the mattress offer more support where needed (for the lighter parts of your body) and more sinkage where needed (for your hips and shoulders).
This helps with optimal spinal alignment.
The cold foam layer also limits any long-term sagging of the mattress, ensuring that your Emma Original will last for a long time.
High density ensures a long lifespan
All the foams used in the Emma mattress are high-density foams, with an average density of 57 kg/m³.
A high density is a good indicator of quality, durability, and lifespan.
The high-density foams ensure you can enjoy your mattress for many years to come.
We can highly recommend the Emma mattress to lighter-weight sleepers and side sleepers of all body types.
As a softer mattress, the Emma Original is especially suited to side sleepers as it allows for optimal spinal alignment.
But lighter-weight sleepers will also find the Emma mattress comfortable.
It's also an excellent orthopaedic mattress, so it'll be well-suited to people with back problems.
Heavier-weight sleepers, especially if they're back or stomach sleepers, should try out the mattress first to see if it offers enough support.
Luckily, the risk-free trial period allows you to do just that. 🥳
We can also recommend the Emma mattress to people looking for a temperature-neutral mattress.
Though, heavy sweaters would be better off choosing a pocket sprung mattress, which allows for greater breathability.
The Emma mattress is also fantastic for couples as it has excellent motion isolation. 👩❤️👨
This means that you won't feel your partner toss and turn at night.
Memory foam can be quite difficult to move around on (as it hugs your body), so the Emma mattress won't be suitable for very restless sleepers.
The Emma mattress is best suited to:
Lighter-weight people
Side sleepers of any weight
People with orthopaedic complaints
Couples
The Emma mattress is less suited to:
Heavier-weight back and stomach sleepers
Heavy sweaters
Restless sleepers
We expand upon each of these points in more detail further on. 👇
Quick note: Just because the mattress may not be right for heavier-weight back and stomach sleepers, heavier sweaters, or restless sleepers, we would still recommend that these people try out the mattress first.
The risk-free trial period is a fantastic way to see if a mattress is right for you or not.
Emma Original mattress firmness
The Emma Original is rated as a medium-firm mattress but we would definitely call it a soft mattress - that's still surprisingly comfortable.
It offers that sleeping-on-a-cloud feeling but still provides sufficient support and stability, allowing you to enjoy your best night's sleep. 💤
We'd rate it at 4 out of 10 on the Sleep Herofirmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
We measured how deeply we sank into the foams
To test the firmness of the Emma Original, we measured how deeply we sank into the foams. 🧮
This is a good indicator of how supportive the mattress would be for different sleepers.
To test this, we used three different sleepers and measured their sinkage depths in various positions.
We always measure at the same place:
If sleeping on the stomach, we measure at the stomach.
If sleeping on the back and sides, we measure at the shoulders and hips.
Our experiment gave the following results:
Person A (1.65 m / 62 kg)
Person B (1.79 m / 70 kg)
Person C (1.95 m / 85 kg)
Sleeping on the back
5 cm (1.9 inches)
6 cm (2.3 inches)
6.5 cm (2.5 inches)
Sleeping on the side
5.5 cm (2.1 inches)
6 cm (2.3 inches)
7.5 cm (2.9 inches)
Sleeping on the stomach
5 cm (1.9 inches)
6 cm (2.3 inches)
7 cm (2.7 inches)
Sitting on the edge
7.5 cm (2.9 inches)
8 cm (3.1 inches)
9 cm (3.5 inches)
These values are typical of softer mattresses.
Our lightest and medium-weight test sleepers didn't sink in too deeply - or too little.
This means that the Emma Original gives just the right amount of support to lighter-weight people or those of smaller builds.
But, you'll notice that our heavier test sleeper sank into the mattress quite a bit. 😳
Even though the body's heavier parts remained well supported, promoting healthy spinal alignment, heavier-weight sleepers or larger builds may interpret the Emma Original as too soft.
It's best to make use of the risk-free trial period to see if the mattress is right for you.
Luckily, Emma offers all its customers a 200-day period in which they can try the mattress.
And, if you're not fully satisfied, you'll get a full refund. 💵
Edge support is lacking
Given that the Emma Original is a soft mattress, it doesn't offer great edge support.
This means that you'll feel as if you're sliding off the mattress when sitting on the edge or sleeping very close to the edge of the mattress.
While this is to be expected with softer mattresses, it is worth keeping in mind if you like to use the entire width of your mattress - or if you're sharing your bed with a partner.
Our suggestion would be to opt for a king-size mattress - or larger - to ensure that both you and your partner have enough space on the mattress to sleep comfortably. 👩❤️👨
Did you know?
The Emma mattress is only available at one level of firmness.
But this does not mean you can't adjust things a little.
Emma Ireland offers you one free layer to help soften or firm up the mattress if you find it isn't quite working for you.
That said, the Emma Original may be too soft for heavier-weight sleepers (averaging 90 kg [198 lbs] or more) or for people who sleep purely on their back or stomach.
These sleeping positions require more hip support, which the Emma Original may not give.
If your hips aren't adequately supported, you're likely to experience some lower back pain. 😩
If this is a concern or you fall into this latter category, then we'd highly recommend you make use of the risk-free trial period to see if the mattress works for you.
What a pleasant discovery - the adaptability of this mattress is great! Definitely a first in my experience. This mattress 'hugs' the body well, regardless of your sleeping position. It feels a bit like you're sleeping in a cocoon. And it really allows your muscles to relax!

Good temperature regulation
The Emma Original mattress regulates body temperature effectively. 🌡
Even though memory foam mattresses are generally warmer and retain more heat than other mattress materials, the Emma mattress regulates temperature surprisingly well.
This is because the Airgocell layer and the fine-meshed top cover increase breathability and airflow and reduce heat storage.
We did not sweat during the test sleep for our Emma Original Ireland mattress review, despite some of our team members testing in 25-degree summer weather and others sharing their bed with a partner. ⛱
That said, if you are a very heavy sweater, we would recommend opting for a hybrid mattress, such as the Emma Hybrid, or a pure pocket sprung mattress, which allows for the most breathability.
Our temperature tests
On the right, you'll see the result of our temperature test for the Emma mattress review.
It shows that the mattress only retains heat exactly where the test sleeper lies.
The rest of the mattress remains completely temperature neutral.
As soon as our test sleeper moved, the previously heated areas cooled down effectively because of the foams' breathability and top cover.
This is a testament to the mattress's cooling properties and proves that the Emma Original effectively regulates temperature.
Low motion transfer
The Emma Original has exceptionally low motion transfer and high point elasticity.
This makes it a great mattress for couples. 💙
The foam layers absorb and dampen movements, ensuring that motion is not carried across the mattress.
To test the Emma Original for our Emma mattress review, we shared the mattress with a partner - and did not feel any movements. 👍
We also didn't feel our partner getting in and out of bed.
This all means that you can enjoy a restful sleep and won't be disturbed by your partner tossing and turning.
Of course, we don't want you to just take our word for it.
To really test the motion transfer abilities of the Emma mattress, we relied on science.
How so?
We used a measuring device to record:
Figure 1: Movement of a lighter-weight person
Figure 2: Movement of a heavier-weight person
Figure 3: Movement when getting in and out of bed
As you can see, the device hardly recorded any movement, which is a testament to the low motion transfer of the Emma Original mattress.
Are you sharing your bed with a partner?
We suggest that couples sharing a bed choose a larger mattress size for a more comfortable sleep.
While the standard double size is sufficient, we'd recommend choosing a king-size mattress. 👑
A king-size mattress will ensure that both you and your partner have ample space to toss and turn, especially considering the lack of edge support with the Emma Original.
For our Emma Original mattress review, we tested the Emma king-size mattress with a partner and slept comfortably.
Emma mattress cover
The Emma mattress features a simple yet elegantly designed cover.
A white, fine-meshed top cover with polyester fibres to regulate humidity.
A robust grey side cover that supports air circulation. 💨
Non-slip elements at the base of the cover.
Carrying handles for easy transportation.
The Emma mattress cover is predominantly made of polyester.
We liked the top cover of the mattress - it's thick and luxurious, incredibly soft, and pleasant to lie on.
You can also remove the coverand machine-wash it at 60 degrees. 🛀
This is fantastic if you have any hygiene concerns.
It also makes the Emma Original a hypoallergenic choice that's great for people prone to allergies. 🤧
Side carrying handles
The Emma mattress has four side carrying handles, which makes moving the mattress or turning it around much more manageable.
However, the handles are relatively weak and can tear quickly, especially if you're handling the mattress more roughly or dealing with one of the larger mattress sizes.
Emma mattress replacement cover
Emma Ireland also offers you the option of buying a replacement mattress cover.
This replacement cover has the same specifications as the original cover.

Also, the Emma Original has a 4.4 rating and over 23 000 customer reviews on the Emma mattress Trustpilot page.
Emma Original Which? test results
The Emma Original is one of Which?'s highest-scoring mattresses and has been rewarded with their Best Buy seal of approval.
Indeed, their highest score is 81% and the Emma Original mattress received an astounding 80%. 🎉
Which? describes the mattress as being supportive, breathable, stable, exceptionally durable, and very easy to move on.
The only con they've listed is that moving the mattress could be slightly easier as the four side carrying handles aren't perfect - which we had noticed as well.
Emma mattress accessories
Besides the mattresses, Emma Ireland also offers other sleeping accessories. 😴
Emma Original pillow
The Emma Pillow features three interchangeable layers of foam:
A top layer of supportive HRX cold foam
A middle layer of breathable Airgocell foam
A bottom layer of viscoelastic memory foam
You can sleep on one, two, or all three layers and choose whether you prefer the more supportive HRX side or the more comfortable memory foam side.
The Emma Original Pillow has been designed to relieve pressure points and reduce neck pain, no matter which sleeping position you prefer.
The pillow is also thermoregulated and features an extra-breathable cover, which allows you to enjoy a cooler sleep.
The Emma mattress protector is an additional layer that you can place over your mattress cover to extend your mattress's lifespan and protect it from spills, stains, bacteria, and dirt.
The Emma mattress protector is waterproof, breathable, and anti-bacterial.
It is also hypoallergenic and can be machine-washed at 40℃, making it an excellent choice for anyone prone to allergies.
Your new Emma mattress will be delivered free of charge and straight to your doorstep, generally within 1 - 3 working days anywhere in mainland Ireland.
Emma Ireland ships with UPS, DPD, and Rhenus.
Currently, Emma Ireland does not ship to the Channel Islands.
Your new mattress is delivered rolled up, vacuum-sealed, and protected in a compact 45 x 45 x 110 cm (17 inches x 17 inches x 43 inches) box specifically designed to fit through narrow passageways.
One person can easily carry the box. 📦
You don't have to unpack your new Emma mattress immediately - it can be stored in the box for up to 4 weeks after delivery.
Can Emma remove your old mattress?
Emma Ireland also offers an old mattress removal service at an additional cost of €39.
You will need to select this option upon checkout, and the company will remove your old mattress when they deliver the new one.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, you will need to bring the mattress to your building's front door as the couriers will not be allowed to enter your home.
We recommend you place your rolled-up and vacuum-sealed Emma mattress straight onto your bed frame after taking it out of the box.
This makes it easier to unfold and ensures that you won't have to carry it around once expanded. 👍
Expansion happens all on its own.
The Emma mattress expands almost instantly as soon as you unfold it and reaches its full size once the plastic wrap has been removed.
Conveniently, Emma includes a handy cutter with your delivery that allows you to snip off the seal and plastic wrapping easily.
Note that full expansion can take up to 6 hours. ⏰
Rarely, such as when the mattress is vacuum packed a bit more tightly, mattresses can take up to 48 hours to expand fully.
You can sleep on your Emma mattress as soon as it has reached its full size, though we'd recommend airing it out for a few hours in a well-ventilated room before covering your new mattress with bedding.
Off-gassing is completely normal
You may notice a slight odour, referred to as off-gassing, when you first unpack the mattress. This is usual for new beds.
Off-gassing is neither toxic nor harmful.
But it can be a little uncomfortable.
The solution?
We recommend unpacking your new mattress in a well-ventilated room and letting it air out. 🏡
The smell should dissipate quickly - within a matter of hours or a few days at most.
The mattress we received only had a slight chemical smell, which disappeared within a few hours.
Emma mattress trial period & returns
The Emma mattress comes standard with a 200-day risk-free trial period, which begins with delivery. 🚚
Emma used to offer a 100-night trial, but Ireland's trial period has been extended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is great as it gives you even more time to try out the mattress in the comfort of your own home.
Why are trial periods so important?
Well, it can take 4 - 6 weeks to get used to a new mattress. Sometimes even longer, depending on how different your previous mattress was.
This means you can't really judge a mattress until your body has gotten used to it.
Of course, if you wake up with back pains or can't sleep well even after 6 weeks, then the mattress might just not be right for you.
Emma mattress returns
If at any point during the trial period you decide the mattress isn't right for you, you can simply return it.
Returns are free and organised and paid for by Emma Ireland. 🥳
Returns are also super easy - all you need to do is contact Emma's customer service via the returns portal.
You'll receive a full refund within 14 working days. 💰
Do I need to keep my Emma box and original packaging for returns?
No, there is no need to keep your Emma box or any of the original packaging.
If you decide to return your Emma mattress, the couriers ordered to pick up the mattress will arrive with the packing materials.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, couriers are not allowed to enter your home.
Emma requests that you please leave any items for return at the first door of your building, but not outside, to protect it from the elements.
If you're more familiar with a different mattress and would like to find out how the Emma Original mattress compares, then you may find the following mattress comparisons helpful.
Which is better, the Eve mattress or the Emma mattress?
Both the Eve mattress and the Emma mattress are made of high-quality materials, offer good support and stability, and provide a high level of comfort.
However, they are suitable for different sleepers.
The Eve Original will be perceived as slightly firmer, while the Emma Original is among the softest models on the market.
We would recommend the Eve Original to side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers who like a medium-firm mattress.
We would recommend the Emma Original to side sleepers who like a soft mattress.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Emma mattress made?
This short video by Emma gives you an excellent overview of how Emma mattresses are made.
It also really explains the bed-in-a-box principle and shows the compression and rolling up of the mattress, which answers many of the questions that first-time bed-in-a-box mattress buyers may have.
Emma testing facility
Emma mattress prototypes are tested by humans and high-tech machines at their testing facility.
These tests verify several elements, including motion isolation and durability.
For the motion isolation tests, pressure is exerted onto one area of the mattress, which - if all goes well - sinks in while the rest of the mattress remains still.
For the durability tests, heavy barrels are rolled along the mattress to see how well the mattress can withstand continuous pressure and heavy weights. 🏋️♀️
These tests ensure that all Emma mattresses are designed with high-quality features before they go into large-scale production.
Where are Emma mattresses made?
Emma is a German company but all mattresses sold in Ireland are also manufactured in Ireland.
Emma mattress certifications
Emma Ireland complies with strict testing and safety requirements during the manufacturing process and ensures that all Emma mattresses comply with the BS 7177 regulation.
This means that the mattress is fire-retardant.
Even though the Emma Original is not an organic mattress, it contains no animal-based components and is 100% vegan.
Emma mattress 10-year guarantee
The Emma mattress is made to last 10 - 12 years.
You shouldn't experience any premature mattress sagging before this time, but make sure that you're using a proper bed frame that will keep your mattress evenly supported.
Any quality divan base, box spring, or slatted base will work.
To ensure that you can rest easy and trust the quality of your purchase, the Emma Original mattress comes with a 10-year guarantee on manufacturing defects.
This warranty covers:
Any dips or sags greater than 2.5 cm (0.9 inches) despite correct use.
Cracks or hollows in the foam within the first 6 months of use.
Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7 inches) leeway across all dimensions.
Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.
In the event of these, Emma will exchange your mattress.
How do I take care of my Emma mattress?
To make sure that your Emma mattress lasts for as long as it's intended to, you need to take good care of it.
We answer your most frequently asked questions here.
Which bed base is best for my Emma mattress?
You can use any quality bed base as long as it provides a flat surface for your mattress. 🛏
We do not recommend slatted bases for Emma mattresses.
This is because slatted bases have gaps between the actual slats, and memory foam mattresses like the Emma tend to conform to this shape, leading to bumps and lumps in the long term.
Do I need to wash my Emma mattress?
No, washing the actual mattress is not recommended.
But, conveniently, the Emma mattress comes with a removable and machine-washable cover. 🛀
We would recommend washing this cover at a high temperature (up to 60℃) once every couple of months, provided you're using a mattress protector to otherwise protect your mattress.
We always recommend using a mattress protector.
If you're not using a mattress protector, you may need to wash your Emma mattress cover more regularly.
You can also wash off single stains by hand, using a gentle washing detergent and a clean cloth.
What weight can the Emma mattress support?
The Emma mattress has been designed to support a maximum weight of 130 kg (286 lbs). ⚖️
If you exceed this upper weight limit, you're more likely to experience mattress sagging.
This will decrease the amount of support the mattress gives you, which may cause back pain.
It also drastically shortens the lifespan of your mattress.
Can you tell me more about Emma?
Emma is a start-up company first established in Germany in 2015.
Contrary to popular belief, the name of the company doesn't pay tribute to the company's founder; instead, it is called Emma Mattress simply because "Emma" was a popular name when the business was first set up.
One of the leading thoughts behind starting Emma was to make the mattress market as transparent and consumer-oriented as the market in the United States.
The company's founder, Max Laarmann, believed that consumers should be able to buy a reasonably priced mattress online and benefit from a long and risk-free trial period.
Today, the Emma mattress is one of the most popular online beds, selling all over the UK, USA, Europe, Australia, and India.
The brand has also expanded and now offers a selection of mattresses and mattress accessories.
What payment options does Emma mattress Ireland offer?
You can purchase your Emma product on the Emma Ireland website via credit card or PayPal. Online payments are secure.
What is the Emma friend referral program?
Emma Ireland offers a friend referral programme, where you can share your unique code to give your friends a discount on their first purchase - and earn money in the process!
This is how it works:
After you have made a purchase, you can share your unique friend referral code.
Your friends will get €20 off their first purchase.
If your friend keeps the purchase beyond the trial period, you'll be rewarded with £20, automatically transferred to your bank account.
You will have to make a minimum purchase of €290 to receive a referral code, and your friend will have to make a minimum purchase of €290 to use the discount.
The discount can be used in conjunction with other promotions that offer up to 30% off.
You can refer up to 8 friends.
What does Emma do with returned mattresses?
Returned Emma mattresses don't go to waste.
Most of them are donated to charities.
If the mattresses are still in mint condition, they may also be refurbished and sold as Emma renewed mattresses via other Emma mattress stockists, such as eBay or Wowcher.
All renewed mattresses are checked for damages and sterilised. The inner and outer covers are also replaced, effectively rendering the mattresses new.
While a renewed Emma mattress review would give you the same results and quality assurance as this Emma Original mattress review, we would still recommend purchasing directly from Emma.
Renewed Emma mattresses may be available at a fraction of the original price, but they do not come with a trial period or a 10-year guarantee.
Can you buy the Emma mattress on Amazon Ireland or through other stockists?
Yes, the Emma mattress is available on Amazon in Ireland and via other Emma mattress stockists, including DFS, Carpetright, and John Lewis.
The 10-year guarantee is valid if you purchase from an approved seller, though delivery conditions are subject to change.
Note, though, that you will only receive a 14-day trial and a 6-month guarantee if you purchase refurbished mattresses through agents such as Wowcher, GoGroopie, or eBay.
What's the difference between the Emma Essential and the Emma Original mattress?
The Emma Original is a high-quality memory foam mattress and Emma's flagship product.
The Emma Essential is a budget mattress.
It is made up of 2 layers of foam:
Temperature regulating and breathable hybrid foam
Supportive HRX cold foam
The mattress has a height of 18 cm (7 inches) and is thus much thinner than the Emma Original.
Like the Emma Original, the Emma Essential also features a washable cover and non-slip base, is made in Ireland, and comes with free delivery.
You won't benefit from a trial period, though, and the mattress only has a 5-year guarantee.
The Emma Essential is cheaper and a good choice if you're on a budget.
What's the difference between the Emma Original and the Emma Hybrid?
Both the Emma Original and the Emma Hybrid are high-quality mattresses by Emma.
The Emma Original is the flagship Emma mattress made primarily of memory foam.
It is a soft mattress, most suitable for light- to average-weight side sleepers.
The Emma Mattress Hybrid, in contrast, is a hybrid mattress that features supportive mini pocket springs.
It is a softer mattress better suited to those looking for enhanced breathability.
What's the difference between the Emma Original and the Emma Premium?
Emma advertises the Emma Premium as a mattress with the construction of the Emma Hybrid but the softness of the Emma Original.
It is also a premium mattress and Emma's most advanced and innovative product.
Like the Emma Original, the Emma Premium has upper comfort layers of Airgocell foam and memory foam, and you'll get the same level of comfort.
But, it also features full-size pocket springs in a foam wall encasing and additional cold foam layers for superior point elasticity, edge-to-edge support, stability, and breathability.
The Emma Premium offers far more stability and breathability than the Emma Original. 💨
